Since 1998

Four chairs, one standard.

Twenty-eight years on the same corner of Fourth Avenue. Here’s how a one-chair shop became the reason people drive across Johannesburg for a haircut.

Our story

A borrowed mirror and a secondhand chair.

In 1998 Kenny Mareya took a lease on a narrow unit at the quiet end of Fourth Avenue. He had one chair, a borrowed mirror, a hand-painted sign, and a rule he still repeats to every apprentice: a good cut should still look like a good cut four weeks later.

Parkhurst changed around him. The strip filled with restaurants, the rents climbed, and a dozen shops opened and closed within walking distance. Kenny stayed on the same corner, cutting mostly with scissors, taking the first appointment of the day.

The shop grew by exactly one chair at a time — and only when there was someone good enough to fill it. Every barber on our floor came up through our own apprenticeship, which is the whole reason the standard holds whichever chair you land in.

The long version

Twenty-eight years, five moments

  1. 1998

    One chair, one mirror

Kenny Mareya opens a single-chair shop on Fourth Avenue with a secondhand barber's chair and a hand-painted sign.

  2. 2006

    The second chair

Demand outgrows one pair of hands. The shop takes over the unit next door and the apprenticeship programme begins.

  3. 2015

    Thabo joins

Thabo Nkosi starts as an apprentice, sweeping floors and learning fades. He's run the second chair since 2019.

  4. 2021

    The shave returns

Rea Dlamini brings traditional straight razor wet shaving to the shop, and the Hot Towel Shave becomes a booking in its own right.

  5. 2026

    Four chairs, same standard

Twenty-eight years on Fourth Avenue. Same corner, same founder, still cutting the first appointment of the day.

What we hold to

How we work

Four things we don’t compromise on, however busy the shop gets.

01

Consultation first

No chair time starts until we've agreed on what we're doing. Bring a photo, bring an idea, or bring nothing at all — we'll work it out together before the clippers come out.

02

Time to do it properly

We book in forty-five minute blocks where most shops book thirty. It means we never rush the blend, and it means you're never waiting on the chair in front of you.

03

Trained in-house

Every barber on our floor came up through our own apprenticeship. It's why the standard is the same whichever chair you land in.

04

A cut that grows out well

Anyone can make hair look good on the day. We cut with week four in mind, so it softens rather than falls apart.

Kenny Mareya

28 years behind the chair

Kenny opened a single-chair shop on Fourth Avenue in 1998 with a borrowed mirror and a secondhand chair. Twenty-eight years later he still takes the first appointment of the day and still cuts almost entirely with scissors.

A good cut should still look like a good cut four weeks later. That's the whole job.

Thabo Nkosi

11 years behind the chair

Thabo came up through the shop as an apprentice in 2015 and now runs the second chair. If you want a fade you can't find the line on, this is the booking to make.

The blend is where the patience goes. Everything else is just tidying up.

Barber & Beard Specialist

Rea Dlamini

8 years behind the chair

Rea trained in traditional wet shaving in Cape Town before joining us in 2021. She has quietly turned the hot towel shave into the appointment our regulars book for the sake of the hour itself.

Nobody should rush a straight razor. That's the point of it.

Ayanda Khumalo, Barber at Kenny's Barbering Co.

Barber

Ayanda Khumalo

6 years behind the chair

Ayanda has the steadiest hands in the shop and the most patience with a nervous six-year-old. He handles most of our Saturday family bookings and all of our curl work.

Every kid's first cut should be one they'd come back for. No tears on my chair.

What our regulars say

I've been going to Kenny for nine years and I've never once had to explain what I want. Worth the drive across town.
Sipho M. Regular since 2017
Booked the Full Service for my wedding morning. Rea gave me the best shave of my life and calmed me down more than the best man did.
Daniel V. Hot Towel Shave
Took my son for his first proper cut. Ayanda had him laughing within a minute. He's already asking when we go back.
Nomsa K. Father & Son
Thabo's fades are genuinely the sharpest in Joburg. I've tried a lot of shops and stopped looking after this one.
